Use BPM and SOA to drive out cost
Aug 31, 2010 at 08:47 PM

One of Oracle's strategic acquisitions was BEA, it enabled to strengthen Oracle’s BPM suite of products by integrating BEA's ALBPMS product.

Companies to cut costs must look at BPM and SOA. BPM gives companies visibility in the process and SOA helps you de-couple your services.

I expect Oracle Fusion Applications to use integration with Fusion Middleware toolset and technologies; Clients will need to focus on an upgrade path / transition strategy to Oracle Fusion Apps with the use of Fusion Middleware

Since 2009, a movement towards Business Processing Management (BPM) tools to model, simulates, and measure enterprise business processes; Oracle offers Oracle Business Process Analyst (BPA) and Business Activity Monitoring (BAM) which will become key for SOA driven projects

Exposure of business processes as web services will require increased security capabilities within a Fusion Middleware implementation, using tools such as Web Services Manager and/or Identity Management to manage, authorize, and authenticate users

Important to leverage Oracle AIA for pre-built Process Integration packs and develop new Process Integrations based on Industry Reference Models; use of Foundation services in AIA will help reduce development effort through Enterprise Business Objects and Business ProcessesOracle plans to enable business analysts to monitor and change process flows in application integration architecture applications via Oracle BPM Suite(This will become an enormous benefit).

Proposed BPM approach Gain internal competency (build skill set), on your first BPM project use a seasoned consultant to guide the team. On a previous project we started up the business process competency center to ensure that the BPM efforts will scale to the rest of the organization

Identify processes where costs may be high and there is not a focus on measurement.Target this type of process for your first BPM project, and demonstrate tangible benefits.

Last point, a market confusion, BPM is not SOA, but that doesn’t mean they oppose one another. They are distinct yet complementary platforms, used properly, can help everyone in the company. They need each other, they are natural allies.

Tips for OpenWorld 2010
Aug 21, 2010 at 10:41 PM

I have been to quite a few conferences, Oracle's openworld is one of the premier conferences in North America.

Some tips for OpenWorld pre-plan using the schedule builder  make sure you visit the application demo's a great venue because its sole focus is to demo and test new applications. Despite the fact that you will be one of many participants, you will be given great attention.

If you only remember one thing, bring comfortable shoes. You can expect lots of walking and uncomfortable shoes can put a damper on energy very quickly.

Bring business cards for the many drawings that are often offered in exhibit areas.

Arrive at workshops early to choose a good seat and collect handouts. If you anticipate a reason you may need to leave early, sit near the back.

Some conferences have you commit to workshops in advance while others allow you to come and go as you please. If you are not restricted to certain workshops, you may wish to sit in the back and leave if you recognize the workshop is not meeting your expectations.

Take advantages of networking opportunities when you can. There is much to be learned from others from other programs and places. Join in panel discussions, ride the shuttle buses..

Leave time for exploring the exhibit hall. If you think you may purchase something save this trip for the end of your day so you are not stuck carrying these bags with you all day.

I will be attending this year's Openworld and will blog about the conference.

Overview of R12.1 Manufacturing Scheduling
Jul 11, 2010 at 10:33 PM

Consider the problem of scheduling two jobs A1,A2 with one operation each to be loaded in a same  resource R1

If there are 3 jobs?

How many schedules are possible?

Answer :  3! – 3 x 2 x 1= 6schedules.

For 10 jobs – 10 ! = 36,28,800 schedules.

Oracle Manufacturing Scheduling consists of two major components:

  •
    • Constraint-based scheduling engine
    • Scheduler Workbench
    •  The constraint-based scheduling engine schedules jobs and operations based on user-predefined objectives, priorities, resources, and material constraints. It can be possible to reschedule single jobs and operations or the entire shop floor.
  •  The Scheduler Workbench lets user to graphically view and reschedule single jobs and operations based on constraints, such as resource or material shortages. It provides you with a visual display (Gantt chart) of jobs on the shop floor. User can interactively reschedule jobs, operations, and resources. Can manually control the rescheduling or let the system automatically optimize the schedule based on resource and material constraints. The Scheduler Workbench interfaces directly with Oracle Work in Process.

P.S : The updated Oracle R12 documentation user guide has some good examples to familiarize yourself with scheduling.
